Please join us in congratulating the 2010 inductee…

Tino DiMarco

Tino was a three-year varsity wrestler as a HWT, but made quite a splash in '74 & '75.  Not only was he undefeated in dual meets, he was not scored on during his senior year!  He was a Christmas Tourney Champion, sectional champ in '74 & '75, PA State qualifier in '74, and district champ, regional champ & took 3rd place at States in 1975.  He was named the team MVP in '75 as well.  Tino finished with 54 career HS wins.

While attending Bloomsburg College, Tino only wrestled his first two years, but was a PSCAC & EWL runner up and NCAA Div. 1 championship qualifier both years.  At the time he chose not to wrestle his junior year, he was ranked #5 in the pre-season NCAA Div. 1 polls.

Below is a heartwarming memory from a teammate of Tino’s and a Stoga Hall of Famer, Andy Cappelli…

"One of his proudest memories from High School was our come back from a 24 to 8 deficit to Upper Darby in 1974.  With four wrestlers to go we needed two pins and two wins to do it.  I pinned at 154, Jeff Stone beat his opponent by decision at 167, and then George Hahn had to beat Jeff Liemberner at 189, a returning regional place winner, which he did 7-4.  It was amazing.  So it came down to Tino, and we were down 24 to 20 and at  that time there were no superior decisions, so he had to pin for us to win.  The old gym was wall to wall with people 360 degrees around the mat and standing room only.  At that time the cheerleaders sat on the edge of the mat, so you definitely did not want to loose in front of them.  Well, Tino pinned his opponent, whose sole purpose was not to get pinned, and they did not call stalling back then…that was an excepted strategy along with riding time.  Well he did it at 5:58 of a 6:00 minute match for Conestoga to win 26-24, and the crowd literally ran out onto the mat trampling his opponent and picked him up and carried him off the mat.  After that Al (Wolstenholme) called Tino, George, Jeff and I his four horsemen…and he still does today."

Tino currently resides in Downingtown with Evelyn, his wife of 22 years, and his three children, Alex, Deanna and Tina.  Alex and Deanna are in college and Tina is a senior at Downingtown West High School.

Chickie had 40 wins in 2 years on varsity, was the Christmas Tourney Champ in 1971 & 1972, was the Sectional Champ in 1971 & 1972, and the Stoga MVP in 1972. He also qualified for the NCAA Championships at 159 while at Bloomsburg. He went on to wrestle at Bloomsburg College and placed with an honorable mention his freshman year at  the NCAA tournament in Arizona. Chickie Carter wrestled for Coach Roger Sanders at Bloomsburg who was a wonderful inspiration while Chickie wrestled at weights 150-190 lbs throughout his college career.

Chickie became the first coach of the newly organized Conestoga Youth Wrestling Program.  One of his younger wrestlers was eventual State Champion, Jason LaMotta.  He was later hired by Coach Al Wolstenholme (last year’s hall of fame inductee and Conestoga Wrestling Coach emeritus) to coach at TE Middle School. Twenty years later he is still coaching and has been a positive influence to all those who have come in contact with him.

Al Wolstenholme

Coach Wolstenholme was the Conestoga Wrestling head coach for 28 seasons, (1963-1987 & 1993-1998).  He is already an icon in the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame and the District One Hall of Fame. During his long and successful tenure at Conestoga, Coach Wolstenholme earned 327 wins, won 5 League Championships, 15 Sectional Titles and 1 District Championship. Working within the community while coaching at Conestoga, Al Wolstenholme was instrumental in organizing Conestoga Youth Wrestling. He also sponsored the initial Junior Olympics at Conestoga High school. Teaching Conestoga Wrestlers about life beyond the mat, Coach Wolstenholme took his wrestling teams into Philadelphia to help introduce wrestling in the inner city through clinics and demonstrations. There were no doubts when Wolstenholme was voted Coach of the Year ten times.

It was at Conestoga Youth Wrestling that Coach Wolstenhome first coached Jason LaMotta, who went on to earn the State Championship.  Many young men accomplished much under his tutelage.  Fourteen of his former Conestoga Wrestlers qualified for the Division 1 NCAA Championships. Coaching 39 State Qualifiers including Jason Lamotta’s record, he coached 4 runner–up state champions that were among 16 State Place winners.  During his coaching career Al has coached over 85 individual champions of in-season tournaments and over 110 sectional champions.

Coach Wolstenholme is already a wrestling icon in the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame, Southeastern Pennsylvania Hall of Fame, and the District One Hall of Fame. Currently Al Wolstenhome is coaching his 40th year of high school wrestling at Pequea Valley High School and has accrued 412 career wins.
